Field Trip – Wednesday 4th September 2024

This year’s fieldtrip is starting in Melbourne and travelling north to Albury, NSW. On the border of Victoria, the field trip will showcase the unique opportunity to explore some of the world's highest grade gold mineralisation and the rising antimony critical metal industry in Victoria. See drill core examples of Agnico Eagles Fosterville Gold Mine, Mandalay Resources Costerfield Au-Sb Mine, and Southern Cross Gold’s Sunday Creek Au-Sb discovery. Explore the intrusions that permeate the Beechworth area and their metalliferous affiliations and metamorphism on the surrounding rocks.

Itinerary

Bus departs Melbourne

Departure points have been sent to field trip delegates, if you have not been notified please email registrations@discoveriesinthetasmanides.com.au to confirm your booking and itinerary.

Stop 1. Visit the Southern Cross Gold Core shed in Kilmore and see examples of Melbourne Zone High-grade gold and antimony mineralisation from 3 different sites. Learn about the unique structural settings and geology that make these deposits and learn from geologists working on these projects.

Stop 2. Travel to the small town of Tooborac in the foothills of the exceptional Cobaw granite batholith, and learn the important timing of this granite suite in relation to the Bendigo and Melbourne zone, and learn about the major terrane-dividing Mount William Fault and Heathcote Fault zones.
Stop 3. Beechworth

Explore the intrusive complex consisting of granite, quartz monzonite, granodiorite and porphyritic granodiorite intruded into strongly folded Upper Ordovician metasedimentary rocks in the Beechworth district. The Pilot Range Granite has been an important source for tin, mostly mined alluvially, and coincidentally, the alluvial deposits have also been important gold producers, the source of the gold being quartz veins in the adjoining Ordovician metasedimentary rocks. Molybdenite mineralisation is associated with the Everton Granodiorite porphyrite plugs, and in a minor way, with the Mt Stanley Granite.

End in Albury outside the Commercial Club for a well-earned drink at the Ice-Breaker
